Where to Find Story Starters for Kids

There once was a boy who had very dirty feet.

Ever heard of a story starter?

Basically, it’s a phrase, sentence or image that sparks a writer or storyteller to weave a tale by filling in the who, what, when, where, and why behind the prompt.

Story starters are great for young writers and even pre-writing children. I recall vividly loving them as a child, and my son and I have a whole Pinterest board full of photo story starters. We’ve got a little bit of everything over there: crazy cats, shiny rocks and even Angry Birds Easter eggs.

You and your kids are welcome to share our collection.

I’d love to hear where your children get their story ideas!

  1. My kids turn every day events into stories. Like getting a new dog or going on a trip. 🙂 I remember in 9th grade getting an assignment in writing class. We were given a picture and that was it. My picture was a little boy and girl. I loved turning that picture into a story. My mom still has it. 🙂

    • I love stories from everyday events! And I also love mom’s who keep their grown daughter’s writings.

  2. Thank you for these great pictures. i am using some of them for writing prompts for my Grade 3. They are awesome!
